Not polygamy related charges – the FLDS promotes polygamy, which is illegal even in Utahl not incest related charges – the woman in the case was forced to marry and have sex with her cousin (Jepps is awaiting trial on incest related charges in another case.
‘, ‘What I found most interesting on the article in the Times was the statement by the a former member of the sect, who said, “They believe that polygamy is God’s word, and they will still do under-age marriages.” Sect Leader Is Convicted as an Accomplice to Rape – New York Times
Talk about Scriptural literalism. Because the Old Testament patriarchs practiced polygamy, it”s God”s word? Well, according to the canonical Gospels, Jesus never married. Maybe God’s word is that we should have no spouses
The fundamentalists in general argue for a literal interpretation of the Bible, but, as I have argued elsewhere here, that is not possible. There are too many contradictions in the Bible, especially between the Old and New Testaments. Fundamentalist exegetes go through some incredible feats of logic to try to squeeze consistency out of Scripture. Maybe Marcion was right after all.
